Saskatoon Transit Wants Cameras in All New Buses
posted by Huy Dang at
If you take a Saskatoon Transit bus these days, and it happens to be numbered between these ranges: 0601-0618, 0701-0712 or 0801-0816, you may have noticed that these buses have security cameras installed. That's for the driver's protection, as well as the passenger's protection.

There is a camera installed on a New Flyer D40LF as well, which I believe is 9506.

As for the cameras, Saskatoon Transit has said that it wants cameras to be a standard on all new transit buses as a transit passenger was attacked in 2007, while two transit operators were attacked in 2006.

Cops Bust (Root) Beer Kegger
posted by Huy Dang at
Cars lining the street. A house full of young people. A keg and drinking games inside. Police in Wisconsin thought they had an underage boozing party on their hands. Well, that's what it seemed like.

Even though cops made dozens of stupid kids take breath tests, none of them tested positive for alcohol.

You know why that is? The stupid keg was filled with root beer! NOT BEER!

Station 20 West Funding Pulled
posted by Huy Dang at
Station 20 West is a new project along 20th Street West to help some core neighbourhoods that had $8 million in provincial funding, which was granted by the former NDP government.

As of yesterday, the $8 million has been pulled from the project, thanks to the newer Saskatchewan Party government.

As great as affordable housing for low-income people is, $8 million is still better spent on health-care.

I have mixed feelings on this issue.

Loblaw to Shut Down Saskatoon Distribution Centre
posted by Huy Dang at
Loblaw, the owners of the kick-ass Real Canadian Superstore chain and the terrible Extra Foods chain, which for some fucked up reason, Esther likes more than the Real Canadian Superstore, is closing its Saskatoon distribution centre within the next two years.

Despite that, the company is still hiring at its distribution centre here in Saskatoon, otherwise known as Western Grocers.

Once the company shuts down the warehouse, 300 jobs will be lost.

I'm starting to wonder... will this really help the turn-around of Loblaw?

Second Shooting in Saskatoon
posted by Huy Dang at
Saskatoon, the greatest city in the world, has seen its second shooting as of early this morning.

A stupid old guy, perhaps 66 years old, has been arrested, and a 27-year-old is dead.

Now, there's one small connection to this... both the shooting a few weeks ago and this morning's shooting occured on the east side of town.

As you can see, we are clearly becoming the Calgary of Saskatchewan.

CNET Cutting 120 Jobs

Capitol Theatre Closing
posted by Huy Dang at
Capitol Cinemas in downtown Saskatoon is closing April 3, 2008.

Sure, I may not like Empire Theatres all that much, but it's still a shame. I used to like Capitol 4 when it was a Famous Players that wasn't owned by Cineplex.

Oh well, Famous Players still exists, within another evil company, Cineplex. The Galaxy Cinemas in downtown Saskatoon was originally planned to be a Famous Players, not Galaxy.

Windows XP, one of the better operating systems of our time, will finally receive its third Service Pack. This would be the first in almost two four years, with Service Pack 2 being released during the summer of 2004, which brought many improvements to Windows XP.

Hopefully, this third pack will bring even more improvements to the Windows XP operating system.

Old Lady Sues for Laser-patent Infringements?
posted by Huy Dang at
Retired Columbia University professor Gertrude Neumark Rothschild has filed a complaint against Sony, Samsung, Nokia, and almost 30 other companies for their use of light-emitting and laser diodes over which she claims to have patent.

Since the old bag complained to the US International Trade Commission, this has the potential to stop all international sales from these companies until or unless they settle with the kind, and stupid old lady.

There is precedent in this case, as the old bag already filed a suit against Philips and other companies which was settled out of court. Yes, the format war may be over, but there is a chance that one day we will all have to pay a little old lady royalties to watch The Simpsons Movie on a Blu-Ray disc.

Sundown Still Open!
posted by Huy Dang at
Just outside of Saskatoon, or within Saskatoon, there is one drive-in theatre left! And that is the Sundown, which announced it would close in August of 2007.

Well, that's no longer happening, for now... because the owners of the Sundown were going to sell it, but then the potential buyers realized that they couldn't use the land for what they wanted, so they gave up.

So... I plan to travel to the theatre this summer! I've never been to a drive-in theatre before (not even the one in Calgary on 17 Avenue, which caught fire at one point) so this may be the last chance I may ever have!

The owners plan to show a free movie on opening night, hopefully before the beginning of April.

Saskatchewan Party Budget Details
posted by Huy Dang at
You may or may not have noticed this, but the Saskatchewan Party announced a new budget yesterday that is 10% higher than the budget set out last year by that old douche Lorne Calvert and his stupid NDP government.

Well, here's a little more information on it:

Total: $8.57 billion
  • 43.7% is dedicated to health care. That is about $300.1 million more than last year's budget.
  • 22.7% is dedicated to education (approximately $317 million more than last year. If you think about it... maybe this is too much.)
  • $156.6 million for education property tax relief ($133 for the "average" homeowner).
  • $130.1 million in revenue sharing for individual cities (7% more than last year).
  • $25.5 million to continue the university tuition freeze.
  • $12 million graduate retention program for post-secondary grads who stay in-province. So, don't leave Saskatchewan... or you'll stink up the joint!
  • $20.7 million for nurse recruitment and retention. Hmm... maybe they'll hire good-looking nurses?
  • $6.1 million for doctor recruitment, retention and training seats. More doctors... can't go wrong here.
  • $5 million for food banks and community-based groups providing life-and-job-skills training. Who the hell came up with this idea? Lorne Calvert? I seriously hope not.
Well... this looks good to me so far. And as for that hippie Esther Neabel: THE SASKATCHEWAN PARTY FUCKING RULES AND THE NDP HAVE ALWAYS SUCKED AND ALWAYS WILL!

Now... as for James Pepler, USSU president at the University of Saskatchewan, this is all he has to say, "These people in suits and ties and power vests, they don't see it like we do." What the hell is he referring to? If he's going to make a point about affordable student housing, maybe he should have said that directly. Crazy mother-fucker.

Jack Thompson Sanctioned Regarding Inappropriate Supreme Court Filings!
posted by Huy Dang at
The Florida Supreme Court is tired of being stalked by Jack Thompson. He's calling all the time, sending in inappropriate material, begging to be heard, etcetera.

Well, they've had enough and after warning the douche on several occasions and they've finally had to sanction him. If he sends in any more filings with the Supreme Court of Florida, they're going to find him in contempt. At least then, he'll be able to appear before the court.

The court's written decision is quite lengthy but to boil it down, they said, "After submitting inappropriate and pornographic materials to this Court, Thompson was specifically warned that should he continue to submit inappropriate filings, this Court would consider imposing a sanction limiting Thompson's ability to submit further filings... Thompson's multiple responses are rambling, argumentative, and contemptuous..."

So, it's doubtful that he'll be making any progress involving game censorship in Florida. He'll probably keep running his mouth and spewing more filthy poop from his face than any game in existence. So, this should be funny for the next little while.

Real Canadian Superstore Changes Store Hours
posted by Huy Dang at
If you know any better, you would know that the Real Canadian Superstore is conveniently open daily from 8:00 am until 11:00 pm. Well sir, the store is about to get even more convenient.

Well, the store's standard (for most locations) hours (in most locations) for ten or more years were 9:00 am until 10:00 pm Sunday to Friday, and 8:00 am until 10:00 pm on Saturdays. However, in Saskatoon, both locations were open 9:00 am until 10:00 pm Monday to Friday, 8:00 am until 10:00 pm Saturdays and 10:00 am until 6:00 pm on Sundays due to the stupid Store Hours Bylaw that was passed by the City of Saskatoon in 1991. It has since been repealed.

During the summer of 2007, the store hours were changed at most locations to 8:00 am until 11:00 pm (with the exception of Sundays in Saskatoon, which eventually changed when the City smartened up).

Well sir, less than a year after changing their store hours, they will be doing so once again! Effective March 22, 2008, daily store hours at the store will change from 8:00 am until 11:00 pm to the new store hours (in military format):

0700-0000 (7:00 am until midnight)

It is rumoured that this move is an attempt to beat Wal-Mart Canada at their own game.

More Information Regarding Ambush of Tupac
posted by Huy Dang at
LA Times reporter Chuck Philips penned an incendiary article last weekend about the 1994 ambush and shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur at Quad Studio in New York, an event many feel was directly related to his murder months later in Las Vegas.

The article, a follow-up to several previous controversial articles Phillips has written about the Tupac/Biggie murders in the past, reveals what he calls "newly discovered information," including interviews with people who were at the studio that night, supprt’s Shakur's claims that associates of rap impresario Sean "Diddy" Combs were behind the assault. Tupac had always said that he was shot as punishment for disrespecting them and rejecting business offers.

Of course, Diddy has denied the accusations.

"The story is a lie," he said in a statement. "It is beyond ridiculous and completely false. Neither (the late rapper Notorious B.I.G.) nor I had any knowledge of any attack before, during or after it happened. I am shocked that the Los Angeles Times would be so irresponsible as to publish such a baseless and completely untrue story."

"In the past 14 years, I have not even been questioned by law enforcement with regard to the assault of Tupac Shakur, let alone brought up on charges," he continued. "Chuck Philips, the writer ... has reached a new low by employing fourth-hand information from desperate jailhouse informants along with ancient FBI reports to create this fabrication. I simply ask for all rap fans and fans of Tupac to analyze this fiction for what it is."

On a side note, the story was the first investigative report published as a Web exclusive.

"This piece was perfect for the Web," Times Editor Meredith Artley said. "The Web audience skews younger. We had all these great multimedia elements, and we said we really don't need to wait to fit this in the paper."

Now... you know who's wrong? Both of these guys! P. Diddy is not responsible... and Tupac isn't actually dead! If you know any better, Tupac is actually in Africa. We know this is true, because we like to believe everything the guy to the right says. Nathan Dutnall and I met him in grade 11 at Mount Royal Collegiate when we were both taking the Chemistry 20 course with Mr. Holmes!

And if you want to have someone killed, this guy will "take them to hell" for only $1,000,000. Sweet deal...

City of Dallas Losing $ from Red-light Cameras
posted by Joseph Harris at
This is a silly story that makes us smile. If you live in a large city, you are probably familiar with cameras at intersections that snap photos of drivers that run red lights.

Dallas is running into some problems with them.

It seems that they are so effective in stopping people from running red lights that the city is losing too much money from the lack of moving violations.

Each camera costs city hall $3,799 a month and tickets are down 50%. What's the lesson here?

If you follow the law, the government will go bankrupt.

Barry Hotel to Come Down!
posted by Huy Dang at
The current owner of the Barry Hotel at the corner of Avenue B and 20th Street West has been sold to Dr. Tom Maltman by stupid moron Shoshana Goldstein, who has no idea what the City is talking about when it comes to repairs for the building.

This is great, as the bar and hotel will be closed up. The only problem is... once it's demolished, what will take its place? Well, I don't care. As long as the traffic signals at the corner still remain in tact, I will be fine with that. The set-up cannot change, or I'll be pissed off.

As for the people living in there... that's a shame.

The traffic light set-up has changed, but only one signal has been replaced. In the picture you see, there is a hanging set-up where the red light is one with a 12" diameter while the green and amber lights have an 6" diameter. That has since been replaced with an LED signal where all three lights have a 12" diameter. As for the signal below it, along with the walk lights, they have been retrofitted with LEDs.

Google/DoubleClick Deal Approved by European Union
posted by Huy Dang at
Google now owns DoubleClick and now owns even more of the online advertising market. Competing companies like Microsoft and Yahoo! are worried that Google will be able to jack up their prices while maintaining their marketshare.

Maybe Microsoft and Yahoo! should get some merging done and try to compete with Google. It's probably the only way they can even hope to put up a fight on the Interweb.

The buyout was given approval by the European Union, which is notoriously hateful of monopolies and antitrust issues. They found no issue with this purchase, but Google is currently being probed on privacy issues, which should be resolved by April.

Videogame-hating Governator Goes Bad
posted by Joseph Harris at
Ordinarily, the moral turpitude of the people that Americans elect to lead them doesn't warrant a mention on our website--we're too busy waiting for Mario Kart to come out--but today's political scandal warrants a mention.

According to the New York Times, New York's Democratic governor Eilot Spitzer is enmeshed in a prostitution scandal due to wiretaps that seem to show that the Governor engaged the services of a high-price call girl. He's expected to give a statement this afternoon. Why should gamers care? Because Spitzer has been an outspoken advocate of tougher, mandatory regulations on videogames. Here's what he said during his 2006 campaign for governor:
Like all parents, I know it is increasingly difficult to protect our children from negative influences... self-regulation doesn’t always work... we have learned that when self-regulation fails, government must step in... we must do more to protect our children from excessive sex and violence in the media...

Media content has gotten more graphic, more violent and more sex-based... currently, nothing under New York State law prohibits a fourteen-year old from walking into a video store and buying... a game like ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ which rewards a player for stealing cars and beating people up. Children can even simulate having sex with a prostitute...
Perhaps if people stuck to pretending to have sex with a prostitute, they wouldn't destroy their political careers... just a thought.

Mila Kunis In "Max Payne"
posted by Joseph Harris at
Mila Kunis, who you will no doubt remember as the hot little number who once was one of the stars of That 70's Show, will star opposite Mark Wahlberg in Max Payne, the movie based on the Rockstar videogame. In the film, Kunis will play an assassin who teams with Max to help avenge the death of her sister.

To be honest, we don't care what role she's in, as long as we get to see Ms. Kunis onscreen, though the fact that she will be playing an assassin greatly improves the chances that at least some of the onscreen action will take place while she's dressed in rubber or leather, and we're just fine with that, thank you.

Microsoft Decides to Say "Fuck It" with HD-DVD... Goes with Blu-Ray
posted by Joseph Harris at
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says they'll work with Blu-ray "in ways that make sense." This is a complete 180 from 2007 as Microsoft had quite obviously supported HD-DVD with their Xbox peripheral, which by the way has dropped significantly in price if you're looking to build up your dead format museum.

Ballmer went on to say that they've "already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like..." Microsoft continues to tout that their console is primarily for gaming and that people aren't buying similar devices for their HD movie capabilities. Try telling that to Sony, who has seen a steady rise in sales recently and seems poised to surpass the Xbox 360 in overall sales very soon.

Teachers Want Stores to BAN "Bully"
posted by Joseph Harris at
Rockstar Games recently released an updated version of Bully: Scholarship Edition. And now, a bunch of teachers across Canada and the world (about 4 million) want the game banned from stores.

The game itself is centred on the life of a 15-year-old student who challenges all students and teachers who might happen to cross his path. It's such an innocent game... how could anyone hate it?

Videogame Industry: Recession-proof
posted by Joseph Harris at
There's a recession on... or it's coming... depending on who you believe. Either way, lots of people are threatened by what will happen to their jobs and lifestyle as the sluggish economy continues its downturn down in the USA. Well, apparently, among the people that need not worry are those in the videogaming industry, which many economic analysts consider to be a recession-proof industry.

Any why, might we ask, is that? It's because, even in times of financial crisis, people need a diversion, and games are a good way to get a lot from a comparatively minimum investment. It's like going to the movies... a cheap way to take your mind off of the lack of money in your pocket.

Hollywood Breaks Income Record
posted by Joseph Harris at
Hollywood studios brought in a record $9.6 billion in the US and Canada for the 2007 calendar year, thanks mostly to boosted ticket prices. It's unclear how much the writer's strike affected that total, in a town that reportedly lost $2.9 billion because of it. It's possible that the rippling effects of the strike will not be felt in films as immediately as they were in TV.

Ticket sales for movies have leveled off at around 1.4 billion a year and that trend stretches back a few years even as the average cost that Hollywood spends per movie is increasing from around $100 million in 2006 to around $106.6 million last year.

Ziff Davis Files for Bankruptcy
posted by Huy Dang at
Magazine and internet publishing powerhouse Ziff Davis, the people behind Electronic Gaming Monthly, 1up.com, PC Magazine, filefront.com and ZDTV (which later became TechTV, which later merged with G4), have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of a debt restructuring plan.

The restructuring agreement was made with an group of senior secured note holders who agreed to pay up to $24.5 million to fund Ziff Davis' operations during and after the Chapter 11 case.

If the restructuring is approved, the company's $225 million senior-note debt would be reduced. The debt would then be exchanged for a new $50 million senior secured note and at least 88.8% of the common stock in the reorganized company. The company plans to reorganize as well.

CEO Jason Young said in a statement. "Today's restructuring agreement goes a long way toward resolving the burdens of a debt load and capital structure established seven years ago, during a leveraged buyout of the company."

Bedford Road Collegiate Threat: Cops Still There Today
posted by Huy Dang at
Yesterday, cops spent an entire day at Bedford Road Collegiate. Today, they plan to stay there today until they complete the "investigation" after some little douche-bag wrote a threatening message on the wall of a bathroom.

Cops are currently speaking to several people. Here's how I see it... if cops are taking it serious, maybe they shouldn't top it off with random shootings and slaps. Yeah, police violence is always appreciated. It's always entertaining!

I wouldn't be surprised if the Saskatoon Police Service resorted to that. I love our police service.

Kick-ass Detours Await You Downtown!
posted by Huy Dang at
Saskatoon, Canada's most kick-ass city is beautiful, especially when it's full of traffic detours, because of the River Landing development. Remember last year when 19th Street was closed between 2nd Avenue South and Avenue A South? Well, it's going to happen again this year.

Last year, traffic between Avenue D South and Idylwyld Drive South on 20th Street West was insane. This year, they hope to ease the traffic flow by disallowing left turns from 20th Street at Avenues B and C. Sweet deal. I hate driving along 20th Street, as 22nd Street will always be better! However, I do like the way the traffic signals are set up along 20th Street at Avenues B, C and D.

Also, the on-ramp onto the Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge from 1st Avenue South from will be demolished. It will be replaced by a signalled intersection at 19th Street East, which will be completed by October.

Paramount Interested in Videogames
posted by Joseph Harris at
Paramount Studios is interested in getting into the videogame business, or so it would seem from comments that they've made recently. According to Paramount Digital's general manager of worldwide distribution, Alex Carloss, "Paramount is very, very excited about the growth in the interactive entertainment market. I'm sure you're going to see an awful lot more from Paramount in this space."

Now, we're not sure what this could mean. Will Paramount rise up and get into the gaming game, the way that Warner Bros. has, or are they just giving some lip service? Only time will tell, but they could certainly be a major player in the space, considering the kind of money they are likely to bring to the table.

GM Figures Out Lithium-Ion?
posted by Joseph Harris at
General Motors, which is one of the most fucked-up car companies (right up there with Esther) ever, will begin mass production of hybrid vehicles in 2010.

The announcement, made at the Geneva auto show on Tuesday, follows a Mercedes announcement last week that its S-Class sedans will come in a hybrid version next year that uses a lithium-ion battery. Toyota (TM) has also said it will roll out low-emission vehicles using lithium-ion batteries in the near future.

Toyota kicks ass!

The City of Saskatoon, which has boasted the one of the most affordable places to park in North America, has decided it will increase parking rates at metres.

Instead of paying $0.50-$1.00/hour, you will now be paying $1.00 an hour for parking in the Riversdale area and $1.50 per hour in commercial areas, such as downtown.

Hot Issue: Condo Conversions
posted by Huy Dang at
The City of Saskatoon's development review officer is no longer comfortable with making decisions regarding condo converstions on his own. The problem is, there's too many applications for condo conversions.

Community services manager Paul Gauthier told council to expect a report at its next meeting in two weeks outlining the current situation and potential policy changes to deal with the flood of conversions, which coincide with a record-low vacancy rate for renters.

Council narrowly passed a motion from Coun. Bob Pringle to advise developers that any new applications for condo conversions filed in the next several weeks will be placed on hold until city council decides whether to change the current policy.

British Guy Says Videogames Feature Rape?
posted by Joseph Harris at
Keith Vaz, a British politician, cited evidence that videogames let players take part in all manner of violent things, including rape.

Vaz is helping a British law get passed that creates a body that can challenge the British videogame ratings board's decisions on games.

Here's what Vaz said: "Someone sitting at a computer playing a video game, or someone with one of those small devices that young people have these days, the name of which I forget -- PlayStations or PSPs, something of that kind -- well, whatever they are called, when people play these things, they can interact. They can shoot people; they can kill people... they can rape women."

In response to Vaz's comment about game that allowed rape, Edward Vaizey asked: "Is the honourable Gentleman aware of any video game that has as its intention the carrying out of rape or that allows the game player to carry out such an act? The BBFC and I are unaware of any such game."

Can you think of a game with a rating that features rape?

Kid Steals Xbox, iPod: Receives Praise from President
posted by Joseph Harris at
Lewis Bennett, a teenager in Plymouth Township, Pennsylvania, was called a hero by President Bush after he reported on a fellow student who was apparently planning a Columbine-style assault on the local school.

He later broke into the would-be assassin's house and stole an Xbox, an iPod and some air guns.

Bennett’s attorney suggested that the intense media attention on the teen, after President Bush hailed him as a hero, may have influenced his behaviour.

"Metal Gear Solid 4" Too Good for Blu-Ray
posted by Joseph Harris at
According to Famitsu, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said the 50 GB Blu-Ray discs that PlayStation 3 games are packed on are just too small to contain the genius of Metal Gear Solid 4.

Kojimasaid "There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress."

Other than the Japanese voice track, I wonder what we're missing.

City of Saskatoon Faces Tax Crunch
posted by Huy Dang at
The City of Saskatoon, the most kick-ass municipality of all-time in Canada is facing a tax crunch. But don't worry, they have a solution.

You know how the City has been selling lots in shitty neighbourhoods like Hampton Village and that ultra-shitty neighourhood Willowgrove? Well, they plan to use their revenue from selling lots from those neighbourhoods to ease the tax crunch.

Since this isn't really important to me, maybe it's time you do the reading for once. I could care less if the City is losing money, unless it directly affects me.
