"Turn down the volume or face the consequences" is what the Speaker of the legislative assembly in Regina is saying these days.
In an interview yesterday, Speaker Don Toth said that he was expecting a more raucous legislative session and he has definitely been seeing one, and felt the impact personally, since it began near three weeks ago.
"I didn't quite anticipate it would get as nasty as it has at times and if there's a bit of frustration showing, that's what's happening," he said in an interview Monday.
He said that the disruption at this point is mostly coming from the Opposition benches under new NDP Leader Dwain Lingenfelter.
"I think what we've seen in the past over the years is that if a party feels they are struggling, they will look to see if they can find an avenue of breakout and, I think in the past, by having an unruly assembly, there was a sense that the public would pick up on and basically think, well, the government isn't in control. I don't know if the public are there anymore," he said.
But if you were to read the entire article, the Speaker can't really do a whole lot. What's he going to do? Take away the Opposition's time for questions?!
Besides, provincial politics are boring. If anything, Question Period in the House of Commons is much more entertaining!
