9/11: Five Years Later
written on Monday, September 11, 2006 by David Couchman
September 11On September 11, 2001, four commercial planes flying over the United States were hijacked. Two of them crashed into the World Trade Centre's north and south towers (otherwise known as towers 1 and 2). Then, a third plane crashed into the Pentagon. And somewhere in Pennsylvania, another airplane, which was believed to be headed for either the White House or United States Capitol, crashed.

By the end of the day, 4,500 people were killed, towers 1, 2 and 7 of the World Trade Centre and a newly-renovated section of the Pentagon was destroyed. September 11, 2001... it started as a regular day, it ended as a day that changed the world forever.

Since 9/11 affected us greatly, I decided to ask each and every member what they did on 9/11, except for myself... because that would just be odd now, wouldn't it? I did not ask Esther, as she has not been on the computer for a while and has told us in the past that she did not want to be involved in these types of articles because she usually wasn't very good. Now, as for Huy, I recorded what he said and I am typing it out. So, first off... I asked Huy...

And this is what our webmaster, Huy Dang said:
Huy DangAh... September 11. I remember almost everything that happened that day. I woke up on that morning at 7:00 a.m. and got ready for school then I was ready to watch Arthur at 7:30 a.m. for about 25 minutes before having to leave the house and catch the yellow school bus to get to school. But, instead of the usual programming, the CBC had news coverage about a plane crashing into the World Trade Centre. So, my first thought was, "It's no big deal, it's probably just an accident." That WAS my thought until I saw another plane crash into the other twin tower. At this point, I was hooked on watching the news. Then, as I boarded the bus, the radio was on and the south tower had just collapsed when I left my home. On the bus, there was this kid who talked like he knew what was going to happen and said that a war was going to happen, in a way that made it seem like he was really excited about our neighbours to the south being attacked. This is the kind of kid I wanted to beat up. That would be the last time I'd ever see that kid, period.

So, classes went on and for the majority of the classes, we listened to the radio or watched television. We spent the whole two hours of humanities watching television and it was hard to watch both of the towers collapse. I could NOT BELIEVE WHAT I WAS SEEING. And as these towers collapsed, I also thought back to that time the buildings were targeted back on February 26, 1993.

For my math/science class(es), my teacher, whose name was Mrs. McGovern was someone I wanted to shoot because she refused to let us watch the coverage on the terror attacks because "math and science is more important" than the attacks.

Eventually, lunch came and I was scared. Then, I talked to a "friend" of mine whose name was Jesse Finnman... and he was making fun of the people who died and "how cool the attacks were" and stated that he'd like to become a terrorist. So, being the angry person that I was after hearing that, I punched him in the face. He never told anyone and I was never caught... but I'm sure he understands why I punched him in the face.

After lunch, it was time for construction class with Mr. Keyes, a dude whose wife had a baby a few days earlier. So, he tried to comfort us all but there was this one kid, whose name was Tyler that said "Americans are stupid" and deserved the attacks. By the end of the day, a few paramedics came to our school with a stretcher and left with that same stretcher, except Tyler was on it. And, that would be the last time I saw Tyler, EVER. And, there was a middle-eastern kid who kept acting like he was cool... and he became the only middle-eastern person that I thought was a terrorist, because his name was Osama. Today, I'd probably still think he's a terrorist.

Before the day ended, I started to get really, really paranoid and started to believe that terrorists would hijack planes and crash them into Calgary's tallest buildings. But then again, who would do that to Calgary? Well, it was still a possibility. The school day ended and I was more than glad to be home. Then, my cousin from down the street, who worked at Wal-Mart at the time, asked my mother for a ride to work. So, I came with her. So, I was very paranoid and I noticed that a van was stopped on the street past the stop line. So, if the train came by and the things that preventing the vehicles from crossing came down, it would mean it would hit the car. And surely, it did. And instantly, I thought, "It's a work of the terrorists."

My perception has changed since this time... back then, I was scared. But now, I am very selfish and feel that as long as I live in Canada, no terrorists will attack and am starting to believe every government conspiracy related to 9/11 is true. I am truly ashamed of myself and saying anything else about the attacks would make me, and ultimately you, feel uncomfortable. So, this will be all.
Next up, I asked Chelsea...
Chelsea ColborneWell, on this day, I woke up with a cold and went back to sleep. I eventually woke up, and my parents were crying so I didn't know why. They simply told me to watch the news. So, I did... and was horrified to see the images of buildings collapse, and people jumping out of the buildings.

But, this made me more alert and it showed me that oversleeping is NOT a good thing. I know I don't have much to say and that would make me selfish. But, I'm sorry.

I have dealt with a lot of deaths before... and it would be really overwhelming for me if someone I knew were to die the way most people did in the terrorist atack.

Huy told me Esther told him a few things so here's what she said:
Esther NeabelShe woke up, watched Arthur but was interrupted by the 9/11 coverage. Then, she went to school, not realizing how serious the matter was and she started crying when she saw people jumping out of the towers.

Like I said before, I tried making one of these types of articles before but she said she'd rather not contribute because she's not good at things like this. So, there you have it...

Some people are not comfortable when it comes to talking about sensitive subjects such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks. So, this will be all... yes, it is all.
And as for me, I have nothing to say...
