The Huy's HomeTurf!!!@Home Guide to July 4th: Movies to Spend a Long Day Watching
written on Tuesday, July 04, 2006 by David Couchman
Movie CoverLet's face it. Sometimes July 4th can be a holiday overwrought with preparation, only to end in frustration. So much planning, and what does it get you? Often times only a sense of immense disappointment and a sizzling sunburn. Also, now might not be the best time to board the Freedom Train and celebrate the good works of our country.

So, failing that, what do you have? A whole day off with very little to do. And it's usually either hot as hell or raining. When faced with this issue, why not think about spending some time in front of the good old DVD player and seeing some great American films?

Here's our guide to films to watch on July 4th. All of them are winners.

1. Born on the Fourth of July - Nothing will get you feeling more patriotic than this heart-warming story of veteran who discovers just how much his country cares for him. Made by patriotic propagandist Oliver Stone, Tom Cruise hammers home just exactly what the USA thinks of its daring men in uniform.

2. Scarface (1983) - A story about just how an immigrant can be taken into the warm arms of mother America and pull himself up from his bootstraps and make something of himself. Rags to riches? You bet. The most elemental of all American theorems.

3. The Shawshank Redemption - Charming story about the mores of American justice. This docudrama shows just what's in store if you should cross over to the wrong side of the law. There are prices to pay, and the USA will make sure you pay them.

4. Network - This whacky look into the life of our media and the role it plays in the lives of the average American citizen should really be worth sinking your teeth into, especially as it celebrates our precious freedom of speech.

5. I Am Cuba - Presented by Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, this look at the rigors of Communism shows you exactly what's wrong with being a Communist. Everything! Watch and delight in the idea that you are a free American.

That's it for now, kiddies. I hope you are safe and enjoy your holiday.

Oh yeah, I'm in Chicago, celebrating the 4th of July.
